Solar and battery price declines are transforming the motivations to purchase it
The earliest supporters of solar were environmentally minded people who saw it as a way to reduce the pollution and greenhouse gases from fossil fuels. As the cost of solar went down, it became affordable for grid-scale and residential rooftops with some modest tax incentives from federal and state governments.
The industry is now approaching the point where subsidies and incentives are no longer necessary to make solar the most cost-competitive option for generating electricity (the value of solar compared to the grid varies with state and local incentives, regulations, etc).
