Land required for a biomass power plant to generate a gigawatt hour (GWh) of electricity
Most woody biomass is gathered as scraps from forests and mills. But, if biomass takes off as a source of electricity, more aggressive tree harvesting becomes necessary. To generate 1 gigawatt of electricity (GWh), 188 acres of trees need to be harvested each year (this assumes sustainable harvesting that can be repeated each year).
